2026 Tax Refund Estimator

Estimate your 2026 federal income tax and refund or balance due using the new 2026 tax brackets, standard deduction and $2,200 Child Tax Credit. Free and private.

How this tax refund estimator works

Your refund is simply the difference between the federal income tax taken out of your pay during the year and the tax you actually owe. This estimator rebuilds a simplified 2026 Form 1040. It starts with your wages and other taxable income, subtracts pre-tax deductions such as traditional 401(k) contributions to get adjusted gross income (AGI), then subtracts the standard deduction or your itemized deductions to get taxable income. It applies the 2026 tax brackets for your filing status, subtracts the Child Tax Credit and credit for other dependents, and compares the result with what you had withheld. If withholding (plus any refundable credit) is larger, you get a refund; if it's smaller, you owe the difference.

Tip: if you have your W-2, enter the Box 1 amount as wages and leave pre-tax deductions at 0, because Box 1 already excludes 401(k) and cafeteria-plan deductions. Federal tax withheld is in Box 2.

2026 federal tax brackets

These rates apply to taxable income for tax year 2026 (returns filed in early 2027), as published by the IRS in Revenue Procedure 2025-32 after the 2025 tax law known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act made the current rates permanent.

The U.S. system is progressive: each rate applies only to the slice of income inside its bracket. Your marginal rate is the rate on your last dollar of taxable income, while your effective rate is your total tax after credits divided by your AGI, which is always lower.

2026 standard deduction

For 2026 the standard deduction is $16,100 for single filers and married filing separately, $32,200 for married couples filing jointly and $24,150 for heads of household. You can itemize instead (mortgage interest, state and local taxes, charitable gifts and large medical bills) if your total is higher. Choose "Itemize" and enter your total to compare. This calculator does not add the extra standard deduction for taxpayers 65 or older or blind, or the new senior deduction, so older filers may owe less than shown.

Child Tax Credit and credit for other dependents

For 2026 the Child Tax Credit is worth up to $2,200 per qualifying child under age 17. If the credit is more than your tax, up to $1,700 per child can be refunded as the Additional Child Tax Credit, limited to 15% of earned income above $2,500. Other dependents, such as older children or qualifying relatives, can bring a nonrefundable $500 credit. Both credits shrink by $50 for each $1,000 of income above $200,000 ($400,000 for married filing jointly). Children generally need a valid Social Security number.

What this estimate leaves out

To keep it simple, the calculator treats all other income as ordinary income and does not handle self-employment tax, capital gains rates, the Earned Income Tax Credit, education credits, the new deductions for tips, overtime and car-loan interest, the Additional Medicare Tax or the alternative minimum tax. It is an estimate for planning only and is not tax advice. For your actual return, use IRS Free File, tax software or a qualified tax professional.

How to get a bigger refund (or avoid a bill)

Frequently asked questions

How is my tax refund calculated?

Your refund equals federal tax withheld plus refundable credits, minus your total tax after credits. Total tax comes from applying the tax brackets to taxable income (AGI minus your standard or itemized deduction).

What is the standard deduction for 2026?

$16,100 for single and married filing separately, $32,200 for married filing jointly and $24,150 for head of household (IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32).

How much is the Child Tax Credit for 2026?

Up to $2,200 per qualifying child under 17, with up to $1,700 per child refundable. It phases out above $200,000 of income ($400,000 married filing jointly).

What are the 2026 federal tax brackets?

Seven rates: 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35% and 37%. For single filers the 37% rate starts above $640,600 of taxable income, and for joint filers above $768,700.

When will I get my tax refund?

The IRS says most refunds for e-filed returns with direct deposit arrive within 21 days. Refunds that include the Additional Child Tax Credit cannot be issued before mid-February by law.

Is this calculator tax advice?

No. It is a simplified estimate for planning. Your actual tax depends on your full return; consult the IRS or a tax professional.
